Newborn Feeding: How Often & How Much Should Your Baby Eat?

One of the biggest concerns for new parents is whether their newborn is eating enough. Since babies can’t tell us when they’re full (or still hungry), we have to rely on feeding cues, diaper output, and weight gain.

In this guide, we’ll cover:
✔️ How often newborns should eat
✔️ How much breastfed & formula-fed babies need
✔️ Signs your baby is eating enough (or not)

How Often Should Newborns Eat?

Newborns have tiny stomachs and need frequent feeds to stay full and support rapid growth.

📌 General Feeding Guidelines:

Age Breastfed Babies Formula-Fed Babies
0-1 Week Every 1-3 hours (8-12x per day) Every 2-3 hours (6-10x per day)
1-4 Weeks Every 2-3 hours (8-10x per day) Every 3-4 hours (6-8x per day)
1-3 Months Every 2.5-3.5 hours (7-9x per day) Every 3-4 hours (5-7x per day)

📌 Pro Tip: Breastfed babies may eat more frequently since breast milk digests faster than formula.

How Much Should Newborns Eat?

The amount a baby eats varies based on age, weight, and feeding method.

📌 General Amounts Per Feeding:

Age Breastfed Babies Formula-Fed Babies
0-3 Days ½ – 1 oz per feeding ½ – 1 oz per feeding
3-7 Days 1-2 oz per feeding 1-2 oz per feeding
2-4 Weeks 2-4 oz per feeding 2-4 oz per feeding
1-3 Months 3-5 oz per feeding 4-6 oz per feeding

📌 Pro Tip: Breastfed babies’ intake is harder to measure, but if they are producing enough wet diapers and gaining weight, they’re likely getting enough!

📌 Signs Baby Might Not Be Eating Enough:
🚩 Fewer than 6 wet diapers per day

Breastfeeding vs. Bottle-Feeding: What’s Different?

📌 Breastfeeding Notes:
✔️ Milk supply is demand-based—the more baby feeds, the more you produce.
✔️ It’s normal for feedings to vary (some short, some longer).
✔️ Baby may eat more often during growth spurts.

📌 Formula-Feeding Notes:
✔️ Formula takes longer to digest, so feeds may be less frequent.
✔️ Some babies naturally eat less per feeding.
✔️ Overfeeding can happen more easily—watch baby’s fullness cues.
